Alice M. I was looking for reviews of their “Imbolc MMXIV” demo, stumbled on a review of this album that dropped the name of SubRosa, played the first track, and tossed the album into my basket before it could even reach the second half of the song. No regret. Favorite track: Shores of Mourning.

Jeff Richardson Mulled over this production for quite some time before adding. Perhaps, the darkest work in my collection. The author of the preamble mentions one of the purposes for the record ,"as a testament to grief and an exploration of purgatory". Interesting, when one considers the possibility that all corporeal life may in fact be imprisoned Spirit. Why for, is the singular question; the only question. How we escape, well, have you heard about the camel and the needle?
A varied and skillful work, this. Favorite track: Shores of Mourning.

Dan Capp Powerful, beautiful, dark, unique and immersive. This deserves wider attention. Favorite track: Cleansing Rites.

about

Shores of Mourning is Isenordal’s first full-length album, and the follow-up to the band’s 2014 demo recording, Imbolc MMXIV. Conjured from both old and new compositions, the album was produced in 2016 as a testament to grief and an exploration of purgatory, in a time where the group itself was going through arduous lineup changes. It is a monument to our camaraderie with members past and present, and an exploration of the changing of the tides towards and away from those we hold dear. It is a study in loss, and a cry for a long-absent sunrise over a sorrowful and chaotic plane. Mixing Cascadian black metal influences with funeral doom, Viking metal, and neofolk, Shores of Mourning should appeal to fans of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, SUBROSA, and Blood Fire Death-era BATHORY.
